Mummy Dragon

Name: Lorraine Wicks
Dragon Name: Mummy Dragon (Pete's and Diva's Mum)

My role within the Dragons is a varied and busy one! I assist with the monthly car-boots in the summer and collect for them all year. The car-boot season has finished for this year but we have so many lovely donations that I hope to visit and sell our wares at local craft/Christmas fairs.
I am currently arranging a ladies Pamper Evening on the 3rd of November in the White Hart, Launceston. Local business will get the opportunity to showcase and demo their products and the ladies who purchase tickets will get a little bit of vino and some pampering.
I am also Auntie Dragon's right hand Dragon in assisting with the annual Dragon shopping trip. It is intended to be a visit from Launceston to Clarks Village, Somerset. Date to be fixed soon.
I also run the tuck shop at the Cornwall County Council offices where I work with all profits going to the PD cause!
MY MAD CHALLENGE:
In April of this year for some reason I managed to get roped into doing a Zipwire Jump at Adrenaline Quarry (the longest in the UK) with Auntie Dragon. I was absolutely terrified at even the thought of it and tried not to talk about it too much beforehand. I began to get a (high blood pressure) headache about a week before the jump which got worse each day! On the day we had to chauffered as neither of us was fit to drive. Maria chats alot when she is nervous whereas I go quiet, probably a good combination. We arrived and there were lots of supporters to greet us, it was lovely but I was conscious that I may have seemed rude but I just didnt want to talk about what I was about to do!
Maria however wanted to chat to them all (delaying the inevitable??) and so I felt myself getting impatient. We got to the platform and as the harnesses went on I started to feel calmer. We were weighted and both had to have barrels of water attached as we were too light for the amount of wind on the day (lovely :-).
At this stage I have to say that I couldn't actually look up, I kept my mouth tightly shut as I knew that if I said anything I would go to pieces and wouldn't jump. I edged forward to the edge of the platform with my eyes tightly shut thinking "just get on with it", I edged forward a bit at a time gathering up courage as I went.......I
was finally on the edge..........BUT... my strap was too short... so I had to wait while it was adjusted. By now my head was hurting my eyes and mouth were tighly shut and could not be opened after about a minute (felt like forever) my strap was correct and I was pulled back and off I went, I felt myself gliding along and everything was fading (still had my eyes shut!)......i knew I could not pass out and had to think of something......MARIA. Where was she? We were supposed to be doing it together but I could tell that she was not near me as although I could hear her screaming the screams were not close!!!!
I was then spun around so opened my eyes to see where she was - I felt as if I was sliding for ages but kept myself focused on Maria, making sure she was ok. Maria gave me something to concentrate on.
When I got to the bottom a young girl was there to catch me, my legs felt weak and I was shivering, nothing seemed to be working, I certainly couldn't co-ordinate undoing my harness. Then Maria was there, she too was shaking, once her harness was removed we had a big cuddle! My head was banging as I tried to calm Maria, I felt dizzy but.......IT WAS OVER WE HAD DONE IT!!!!!!
NEVER AGAIN!
No-one realised just how scared I was because I go quiet. I felt terrible after and just wanted a cup of tea and some peace and quiet. My head began to feel better a few days later but I would NEVER do it again...........unless........I was offered a million pounds.....then i may just give it a fleeting thought....but...NO THANK YOU!!
I would like however to say a big thank you to all of the supporters on the day and on Facebook and to all of those lovely people that sponsered Maria and I. We are very proud to have made over £500 in just a few minutes work :-)
love Mummy Dragon
